Teaching Research Methods through Popular Films

Description
The use of popular films in teaching can act as an active learning method and provide an opportunity for students to reflect deeply on issues covered in class. At university level, watching a movie followed by discussion with an academic has shown significant impact on students’ exam results, when compared to students who did not watch a movie or watched it without guidance (Yesildag & Bolstan, 2023). Moreover, student satisfaction with this teaching method is high; in a study with health management students, cohorts reported that this method was more catchy than traditional lecturing (ibid).
At WMG, where I teach, I am trialling a Research Methods film club as a pedagogical approach to enhance deep reflection on key concepts. For example, we explored research paradigms by watching The Matrix (1999). This playlist includes some of the film titles and clips I use in my teaching.
