End of the Year Show 1983. TRACK 1- RICHIE STEVENS describes scene at Fratton Park when Portsmouth FC clinched promotion to 2nd division after win over Southend 2-0. 2- STEVE KYTE talking about election results in the South. Conservatives hold seats except in Isle of Wight where Liberal STEPHEN ROSS becomes MP. Interviews with candidates Stephen Ross, CHRISTOPHER CHOPE, PETER GRIFFITHS, RALPH BONNER-PINK, LIBBY CLEAVER, SIR DAVID PRICE. 3- CHRIS MANN speaking to MARION and DEBBIE PRICE, mother and sister of leading electrician DONALD PRICE of Gosport who was killed in the Falkland Islands in 1982. They have gone to visit the Falklands with other relatives of those who died. They are asked about their feelings on visiting the Islands. 4- Visit by PRINCE ANDREW to Portsmouth to open Mountbatten Centre at Alexandra Park. Steve Kyte asks young people waiting there why they have come to see him. Interview with CHARLES MOS, Chairman of City Council’s Leisure Committee. Prince Andrew’s speech at opening ceremony. 5- Mary Rose now on view to the public. Interviews with visitors to the Mary Rose and their reactions. Interview with ARTHUR ROGERS, spokesman for Mary Rose Trust, next project will be to turn Mary Rose upright. TRACK 2-Waterworkers strike. Chris Rider reports on effects in Hayling Island at Blackthorn Road, Blackthorn Drive. TONY and MARGARET ALDRICH, neither in good health, interviewed waterworkers strike affects many of residents, disabled, elderly, babies. People had to rely on standpipes for 5 weeks. 2- Recession and layoffs in the south. Whitbread, Portsmouth planning to lay off 123 workers due to increased lager drinking. Workers plan for co-operative rejected, possible reason for this. Whitbreads ideas about new employment for workers. Talks between union and management continue. 3- Portsmouth Dockyard, by unique agreement between bases 12 tradeunions and management, civilian and navy staff able to work together, but still 500 redundancies. Interview: Vice Admiral ANTHONY TIPPETT [in charge of Port] talks about future role of Portsmouth Dockyard and ability to cope in any future war. 4- Trouble at Albany Prison, Isle of Wight. 1 million pounds damage. Interview with governor PETER MEATCH about uneasiness to prevent repetition and repairs necessary. Staff shortages discussed. 5- Child molesting in Portsmouth by man not yet found. Interview with detective. Description of man. 6- Increase in crime in Hampshire. Interview with Chief Constable JOHN DUKE. More than half of crimes, petty burglary especially from cars could be avoided by putting goods out of sight and taking sensible precautions at home. 7- Sale of only VC awarded in WWII to a fighter pilot [awarded to JAMES NICHOLSON after dogfight with German aircraft over Eastleigh in 1940]. Sold for 110 thousand pounds at auction to RAF Hendon to raise money for widow and highlights problems of war widows. 8- Chris Rider talking about Thrust Two, car built on Isle of Wight, driven by RICHARD NOBLE at 633 mph on Nevada Desert to break land speed record. Interviews with Richard Noble and MARY ELSAM wife of Trust’s Operations Director Eddie Elsam, DOUG POLLARD, IOW Tourist Board. 9- JEREMY GILLEY from Southampton had lead role in Bugsy Malone. Interviews with JO-EESE WALLER, co-star and Jeremy Gilley about auditons for parts, the characters they play. 10- Visit of PRINCESS OF WALES to Silver Jubilee Centre in Bursledon to meet handicapped children. Karen Ross interviews people waiting to see her and those who met her. [Box 6]
