OCEAN SOUND THIS WEEK NO. 34 Programme 34 of a weekly news and sports review called Ocean Sound This Week, broadcast by independent radio station Ocean Sound on 14 June 1987. Presented by MATT HOPPER. TRACK 1- CHRIS RIDER gives a post General Election report. The Ocean Sound area is a sea of blue. In Portsmouth South, the Alliance’s sitting MP, MIKE HANCOCK, concedes defeat after 2 recounts and the Conservative victor, DAVID MARTIN, speaks. In the Isle of Wight BARRIE FIELD, the Conservative candidate wins against MICHAEL YOUNG for the Alliance who expresses bitter disappointment. In Southampton Itchen CHRISTOPER CHOPE increases his Conservative majority and declares Labour’s defence policy let them down. Unsuccessful Labour candidate for Southampton Test, ALAN WHITEHEAD, claims increased share of the vote, and alleges that Conservatives conducted a smear campaign. Conservative member for Winchester, JOHN BROWNE, has his majority slashed by half and concedes that headline making divorce case didn’t help. Sir DAVID PRICE, serving Conservative member for Eastleigh, says: he is very gratified by the result. Arcadia sing Election Day. GUY HORNSBY interviews Ben E King, soul artist, one of whose best known numbers, Stand by Me, is enjoying a come back after many years. KING says nostalgia is coming back. His personal favourites from his repertoire are There goes my Baby, I count the Tears, and Spanish Harlem. BEN E KING sings Stand by Me. TRACK 2- Review of the week’s news and sport. News - ALISON HOLT reporting. An 83 year old from Lockerley, near Romsey, suffers a vicious attack from an intruder and neighbour says: it was very sad that we didn’t prevent the lady from being beaten up. At Chandlers Ford a 25 year old woman saves herself from rape by her screams, heard by her father, when she was walking along a path and a passing cyclist came back and attacked her. Dt Inspector TREVOR WITT speaks. An epileptic man dies in his bath only 2 hours before he was due to marry. In the excitement, he forgot to take vital tablets. GUY PHILLIPS reports. Portsmouth couple found guilty of failing to send their 2 daughters to school but allege that girls played truant after one of them had been sexually assaulted by a schoolfriend’s father. Nationwide Civil Service strike spreads to Ocean Sound area with picketing outside Government offices. At Portsmouth Ferry Port Customs Officers claim complete stoppage of flow of lorries between Portsmouth and the Continent in industrial action which they are taking but Union spokesman, JOHN KENT says that they have managed to avoid a backlog of lorries. They simply are not coming into Portsmouth. Sport - GUY PHILLIPS reporting. A disappointing week for Hampshire Cricket, defeated by Sussex in the Refuge Assurance League match and washed out in the County Championships match against Surrey. CHRIS SCUDDER reports on latter and interviews Hampshire’s Captain, MARK NICHOLAS. Pompey’s Football Manager, ALAN BALL, continues to strengthen squad with signing of IAN STEWART from Newcastle on a fee transfer but team’s KEVIN DILLON announces: played last game for Club. However, ALAN BALL, is quick to deny that MICK QUINN is moving. Restructuring of the Heiniken Ice Hockey League will split Division 1 into North and South regions and Southampton’s Vikings Commercial Director, JEFF FIELDER, says he is reasonably pleased. UB 40 sing Many Rivers To Cross. SIMON FENNER, a West Sussex engineer. together with 5 others, plans to climb the hitherto unconquered 6,300m. Himalayan peak Hagshu ? in the Kish Twa ? range. Simon’s father GEORGE speaks and admits that mountain has a formidable reputation. PETE WARDMAN interviews TOM and ALANAH, only surviving performers in the original seven Thomson Twins. They have just released a new album, Close to the Bone, and sing It’s a Long Goodbye. Witney Houston sings: I want to dance with Somebody, this week’s Network No 1. [Box 9]
