OCEAN SOUND THIS WEEK NO. 35 Programme 35 of a weekly news and sports review called Ocean Sound This Week, broadcast by independent radio station Ocean Sound on 21 June 1987. Presented by MATT HOPPER. TRACK 1- GUY HORNSBY reports on a kidnap mystery in Swaythling where a man was seen bundled into a car before which he was seen to be photographed whilst lying in the road. Dt Supt ARTHUR MANDRY is interviewed and says that bits of the jigsaw are still missing. Portsmouth City Transport announces that it is to scrap all City services before 7.00am and after 7.00pm because they are unprofitable. CHRIS RIDER interviews JOHN CALDER, one of Hampshire County Council’s Public Transport Officers, who explains that the County Council will invite tenders from all bus operators to fill gaps where the service is evaluated as necessary by the County. JANE HILL interviews ERIC BOYES, Managing Director of Portsmouth City Transport who re-assures her that not all services will be scrapped. The company his simply been running too many buses. It is not trying to hold a pistol to the head of the County Council for subsidy. The changes will take effect from July 20th. The Who sing Magic Bus, from the 1960s. TRACK 2- JEAN PAUL HANSFORD, on board the tug Flying Kestrel, reports on HMS Warrior’s triumphant return to Portsmouth, her original home port, after a 10 year restoration in Hartlepool. Also on board tug is Admiral ALEC WEIR who is interviewed and is very much involved in the berthing of Warrior. Music I have loved You Dearly. MATT HOPPER interviews MALDWYN DRUMMOND, Chairman of the Warrior Preservation Trust, who says that there is plenty to see below decks including the galley and chart room. Warrior will be open to the public at its permanent berth at the Hard on July 27th. TRACK 3-Review of the week’s news and sport. News - ALISON HOLT reporting. A 5 year old Portsmouth girl is enticed from Charles Dickens First School and viciously raped. Dt Supt ROGER HODDINOTT is interviewed and says that the case has left him shocked. Lollipop man, ARTHUR OTTLEY, says: I couldn’t believe the attack. JANE HILL reports on an inquest which hears that a fire at Four Marks Green, West Leigh which killed a pregnant teenage girl and her boyfriend was caused by children in the house playing with a lighter. Ryvan, the Hedge End chemical firm, is being taken to Court for a chemical spillage at its premises which caused a number of hospital casualties. Dr CAROLINE CAHM of Buswatch is interviewed regarding the proposed termination by Portsmouth City Transport of certain early morning and evening services [see previous report TRACK 1]. Dr CAHM says that City should step in if County will not. Sport - CHRIS SCUDDER reporting. Dairy Crest Games, the first international athletics tournament to be held in Portsmouth since 1971, is staged at the Mountbatten Centre. ROGER BLACK triumphs in the 400m achieving 45.56 seconds. Superb performance by LINFORD CHRISTIE at 10.04 seconds in the 100m. ROGER BLACK wins the 4 by 400m relay. Hampshire Cricket is held up by weather in the County Championship matches against Surrey and Yorkshire. Rumour that former Saints Football Manager, Lawrie McMenemy is coming to Portsmouth is dismissed as a load of nonsense, by Pompey’s Chairman, JOHN DEACON. On the longest day of the year, Fareham and Romsey Cricket Clubs celebrate in style by playing against each other in a match starting at 4.47am and finishing at 9.30pm. CHRIS SCUDDER asks Fareham’s PAUL BARRETT how it all came about and is told that it just evolved but was not a good idea! Aim was to raise money for the Queen Alexandra Hospital Body Scanner Appeal and for the Fareham Cricket Club. JEAN PAUL HANSFORD interviews the outrageous PAMELA STEPHENSON, currently appearing at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre. Asked if she is afraid of losing her unpredictibility she says: Look at me now. Sweet and serene!. BRIAN WOLF reports on the Schneider Trophy Air Race from inside the cockpit of one of the competitors. The Firm sing Star Trekking, this week’s Network No 1. [Box 9]
