- Description
- Report on recent violence in Lebanon. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has been consulting urgently with her ministers and advisers over the future of the 100-strong British contingent in the multi-national peacekeeping force in Lebanon. The collapse of President Bachir Gemayel’s government and the outbreak of virtual civil war between Muslim and Christian forces now raise serious doubts about whether the peacekeeping force can continue to do the job it was sent to do or whether it faces the risk of being drawn into the conflict. Thatcher speaks in the House of Commons about the serious situation in Beirut. Shadow Foreign Minister Denis Healey says the troops should be pulled out now. The Americans blame the Syrians for the latest violence, because they back the Muslims. Male reporter not identified.
