- Arthur Scargill, President of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), on the strikes. Scargill says the police presence in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire is unwarranted and unprecedented. He condemns Ian MacGregor, head of the National Coal Board. The miners have received support from the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), the NUR (National Union of Railwaymen) and the National Union of Seamen. Miners are asking Scargill to call a national ballot.
