Des Fahy reports on an attempt by Conservative MP Richard Shepherd to bring forward a private member’s bill to reform the Official Secrets Act to allow access to more information, despite Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s fierce objection to it. The proposal was defeated but the Government’s majority was slashed to just 37.
