National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) branch treasurer Jim Sawyer says the average age of workers at Ellington in Northumberland is 35. British Coal spokesman Stuart Oliver says there was no way to make the pit profitable. Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick, Alan Beith says the miners have been betrayed.
