Description
Commuters have had their first taste of privatisation after a weekend of embarrassment for the Government over its plans. The first private services in nearly half a century began yesterday from Stagecoach (for South West trains) and Great Western Holdings - but not on the London-Tilbury-Southend line, which was supposed to have been in the vanguard of the process, as its sell-off was postponed following ticket fraud allegations. London Today’s Malcolm Brown reports including contributions from Labour’s Transport Spokesman Brian Wilson; Transport Minister John Watts; Stephen Newton from the Southend Rail Travellers Association; Stagecoach spokesman Peter Field and Director of the pressure group Transport 2000, Stephen Joseph.
