Health Minister Brian Mawhinney defends the government’s decision to increase prescription charges by 50 pence to £4.25 per item, a 13 percent rise and almost eight times the inflation rate. Mawhinney argues those who can afford to make a contribution should do so, to raise an additional £280 million for the NHS for patient care.
