- Foriegn Secretary Sir Geoffrey Howe makes it clear at a Foreign Press Association lunch that Britain will not accept incitement to violence against Salman Rushdie and publishers of The Satanic Verses following issuing of a fatwa by Iran’s Ayatollah Khomeini. He outlines diplomatic action being taken but refuses to comment on threats by an Iranian group to bomb British Airways planes flying to India. Rushdie’s MP Chris Smith says he is in hiding and is very worried. Lisa Hampele reports for Update programme.
