- Talks between European agriculture ministers on the welfare of animals transported for slaughter have ended without agreement. After two days of discussions the Northern and Southern EU countries are no nearer to a settlement. Ministers will return to the negotiating table next month. Britain is taking a tough line insisting on a legal maximum journey time Speaking at a press conference after the talks ended Agriculture Minister William Waldegrave said he was unable to accept a French proposal and said it should not be seen purely as an economic issue.
