- Report on the official inquiry into the Strangeways Prison riot, and the subsequent disturbances in other prisons. Lord Justice (Harry) Woolf says that although Strangeways will be his focus, he has not come to any conclusions about what specifically needs to be investigated, but will consider staffing implications. He admits that it may be difficult not to interfere with criminal proceedings in regard to the riots. No date has been set for the final findings to be made public. Peter Russell reports from Westminster.
