Extract from a speech by UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Norman Lamont to the European Policy Forum, in which he delivers a rebuke to Conservative MPs who favour pulling out of the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM). Lamont says Britain would face economic disaster if the policy were to change. In his speech he disagrees with former Prime Minister, Baroness Thatcher (Margaret Thatcher), who is advocating drastic cuts in interest rates. Lamont makes it clear that the Government has no intention of changing course.
