- Description
- The Government has announced plans for the redevelopment of riot-torn Strangeways prison, at a cost of sixty million pounds. The aim is to modernise the Victorian jail that was badly damaged when it was stormed by inmates, and to provide places for nearly a thousand prisoners within three years. The decision was announced by Home Office Prisons Minister David Mellor. He tells Kevin Murphy that the modernisation is in no way an admission that the rioters’ complaints of bad conditions at Strangeways were justified.
