Chancellor John Major says interest rates will have to stay high in an effort to control inflation. He conceded at the Confederation of British Industry’s annual dinner that the Government’s monetary policy should have been tighter to hold down inflation, and he warned of a difficult year ahead for the economy following a rise in unemployment.
