Conservative Party Chairman Kenneth Baker is determined that politics will remain centre stage throughout the summer holidays. The Tories have been left watching Labour steal the centre ground and soar away in the opinion polls. Baker does not want to face the party conference this autumn without having expended considerable energy trying to retrieve the situation. Des Fahy went to the launch of the summer campaign (at which Chancellor John Major also spoke) this morning, and reports a military flavour to it all.
