Description
A number of leading scientists have challenged the Government’s assertion that British beef is safe to eat. They were giving evidence to the Commons Select Committee on Agriculture (Chairman: Jerry Wiggin MP). Most outspoken was Professor Richard Lacey, who said we do not know whether beef is safe, and accused the Government of being involved in a cover-up to prevent a public backlash. Professor Ivor Mills claimed beef muscle is safe. Dr Helen Grant claimed the sawing off of the head could contaminate the rest of a carcass. Peter Russell reports.
