Dr Abraham Karpas (Assistant Director of the Research Department of Haematology at the University of Cambridge Clinical School) is interviewed about the most recent strain of HIV - known as HIV-2, isolated in 1985/86 in France. He says it may be far more widespread than people believe and could be more dangerous than HIV-1 because the symptoms can take years to develop. He says people may have been spreading the disease unknowingly via partners and blood donations. He has been lobbying the Government for two years to have people screened for HIV-2.
