Description
Jews in North London have been granted permission to set up a religious enclosure, called an eruv, in Hendon. The eruv is marked out by a long wire mounted on tall poles; Orthodox Jews can, for instance, use wheelchairs and prams on the Sabbath within its boundaries. It has strirred up a good deal of local feeling. Barnet Council originally refused planning permission, a decision overturned by Environment Secretary, John Gummer. Max Cotton reports from the radio car in Hendon, speaking with Edward Black of the Eruv Committee, and Councillor Jack Cohen of Barnet Borough Council.
