Description
Western witnesses of the Tiananmen Square massacre and the subsequent fighting have said they thought the soldiers were poised to mount a raid. A Cambridge academic just back from Beijing says the situation is now so volatile that even a letter from the West could be a death sentence. Valerie Grosvenor Myer says any Chinese person who upsets the army is likely to be shot, and she warns people ouside of China not to contact Chinese friends there because it could prove fatal for them.
