Telephone report by Alan Cowell on the killings in Kolwezi in southern Zaire during an eight-day occupation by Katangese rebels. White survivors of the invasion are being airlifted but there are claims that French Legionnaires killed some whites during the rescue operation. There are reports that more than 100 people died in massacres, and there is a deepening rift between Belgian and French troops involved in the relief mission.
