- Description
- The first public reading in Britain of Salman Rushdie’s controversial book, The Satanic Verses, has gone ahead without trouble. Rushdie is still in hiding due to the death threat (fatwa) issued by an Islamic leader. Around 130 people listened to writers reading extracts (some heard) at the Conway Hall in central London. Our reporter Eve Conway was there. Comments from Martin Amis; Muslim author Adel Darwish, organiser musician Larry Adler; extract reader and former Labour Party leader Michael Foot.
