- Description
- John Alcock reports on the Trades Union Congress (TUC) conference which has been debating the expulsion of the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union (EEPTU) from the TUC for breaching its regulations. Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU) leader, Bill Jordan urged the TUC not to kick out the EEPTU â with whom he wants the AEU to merge â but instead to continue their suspension; he is ordered off the rostrum by TUC President, Clive Jenkins. TUC General Secretary, Norman Willis says that the expulsion is a necessity but EEPTU leader, Eric Hammond, defiantly declares that he has been the vic tim of a witch-hunt. Willis’s response prompts strong applause (at which Hammond stormed out of the conference and the TUC). The delegates voted overwhelmingly in favour of expulsion.
