- Following the creation of the Social and Liberal Democrats (SLDP), the leader of the re-formed Social Democratic Party (SDP), Dr David Owen, makes a rallying address to his party at their conference in Torquay. He says the SDP is willing to join forces with any party in an anti-Conservative coalition and urges Paddy Ashdown to reconsider his opposition to the SDP.
