- Two of the country’s major church leaders have united to appeal to the Home Secretary, Douglas Hurd, to re-open the case of the Guildford pub bombers. Both the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Robert Runcie, and the head of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, Cardinal Basil Hume, say the evidence against the four convicted was unsatisfactory.
