- Description
- Nick Peters reports on a siege at a luxury hotel in El Salvador where guerrillas of the Marxist-led Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) have been holding guests hostage. The rebels launched a pre-dawn raid on the San Salvador Sheraton, taking hostage Joao Baena Soares, head of the Organization of American States, and other foreign nationals. There are no details on casualties, but two foreign journalists are known to have been shot. The report also looks at controversial US support for the right-wing government in El Salvador. Includes interviews with Douglas Tweedale, UPI news agency; Salvador Sanabria, FMLN spokesman; speech by US President George Bush (with crowd noise). Includes sound of gunfire.
