- Description
- Hayes at the Weekend. Brian Hayes is joined first by Sheila Cassidy, a doctor who was tortured in Chile by police, because she treated a political opponent of the new regime for injuries. She describes her ordeal, and the journal she has written about her time in detention. Journalist Woodrow Wyatt says the Labour party consists of Communists, and that people should vote Conservative. He is a former Labour MP. Idwal Pugh, who has recently become the Ombudsman, joins Hayes to review the parliamentary situation, and define the role of the Ombudsman. He discusses the most common complaints from the public, which include those about social security and income tax. Next up is the privacy issue, which is explained by Patricia Hewitt, the General Secretary of the National Council for Civil Liberties. She describes the records kept by schools about pupils, detailed files which carry on throughout school and are finally used by an employer. A 12 year-old boy was found guilty of manslaughter after he molested a 4 year-old girl and claimed it was the sex education classes at school which gave him the idea. Cathy Crawford of the Family Planning Association describes how she would defend the sex education system, and discusses possible training methods for teachers. Finally, Hayes is joined by William Sapphire, journalist, novelist and Nixon speechwriter, who tells how he rates politicians, and talks about his new book, Full Disclosure.
