- US State Department spokesman Hodding Carter III says there will be no exchange of the Shah for the American diplomats being held hostage in Iran. He says the Shah is not a permanent resident of the USA but needs medical treatment. Communications are difficult between Washington and Tehran. The US Charge d’Affaires in Tehran, Bruce Laingen has said he would not leave the Embassy for fear of attack. The Iranian Charge d’Affaires, Ali Agah says the Shah’s presence in the USA indicates they want to take over Iran. He wants the Shah to stand trial in Iran. Former US President Richard Nixon tells President Carter to stand firm and not give the Shah back. Male reporter not identified.
