- Description
- Our Kind of Town, presented by Keith Howell. This episode focuses on the history of Kentish Town, and spiritualist bookselling. Journalist, Gillian Tindall, author of The Fields Beneath, says transport was at the centre of the settlement’s development and it was only the advent of the railway that marked the decline of the area. Tony Reid(?), owner and manager of the Mercurious(?) bookshop in South Kensington, details the types of books the shop stocks, including books on spiritualism, philosophy and astrology. Adrian Scott also talks with lute player Paul O’Dette about the return of the instrument. Musical recordings played during the programme include George Sheering and Stephan Grapelli performing The Folks Who Live on the Hill; the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Baulk performing Uranus by Gustav Holst. Also a live lute performance by O’Dette. In two parts, divided by short break in audio.
