Cyril Frankel worked as a director on the cinemagazine This Is Britain, produced by the Central Office of Information (COI) [qv] for the Board of Trade [qv]. His only existing credits are for ‘AUTO SUGGESTION’, This Is Britain No.47, ‘SENSE OF TASTE’, This Is Britain No.46 and ‘LOVE OF BOOKS’, This Is Britain No.50, made by the Crown Film Unit [qv] for overseas distribution in 1950-51.
With the closure of the Crown Film Unit in 1952 Frankel followed John Grierson from the COI to Group Three and made the highly acclaimed ‘Man of Africa’ (1953). In the late 1950s and early 1960s he made a succession of features and then directed many episodes of television series including Department S and Randall And Hopkirk Deceased.
