Career
Derrick Knight MBE, FRPS was a documentary film maker and photojournalist. After leaving school in 1936 he started work at the GPO Film Unit. Joining the army in 1939 he was selected for the Army Film Unit. After the war he worked for Technical and Scientific Films [qv] and later as an industrial photographer for Shell until 1960, when he left to become manager of Press Association - Reuter Photos, transforming its photographic working techniques. From 1971 to 1984 Knight worked in the field of army public relations. He was on the councils of the Royal Photographic Society and the Institute of British Photographers.
Whilst working at Technical and Scientific Films, Knight directed the first four issues of Home and Away, stories from which, including ‘THE DRUMS OF DONNINGTON’ in No.1, and ‘NEW LANDMARK ON TYNESIDE’ in No.4 of 1955 were re-used in Babcock Review.
