Career
Arthur Englander entered the film industry in 1931 as a camera assistant with Stoll, before joining Gaumont British in 1933 and Warner in 1937. Englander joined the Army in 1939, and from 1942 onwards was in the Army Kinematograph Service. On demobilisation he joined Basic Films as a lighting cameraman, and in 1947 became director/cameraman on a series of documentary films. During this time he did some freelance work, including some camera work for Mining Review under Data Film Productions [qv]. These credits are for ‘OLD FAITHFUL’ and ‘UP FOR THE CUP’ in Mining Review 4th Year No.4 of December 1950.
In 1951 Englander joined the new Ministry of Works Film Unit as producer/director/cameraman, remaining with them until 1952. In February 1952 he was credited in the camera team for ‘THE LAST JOURNEY (KING’S FUNERAL)' in Pathe News No.52/15, filming at Paddington Station. In 1952 Englander joined the BBC Documentary Film Unit.
