Career
After service in the First World War in 1917 and 1918, Malcolm Lyon went to Cambridge University in 1919. Here he was President of the Footlights Dramatic Club, and also played cricket for the University. After graduation he was called to the Bar in 1925, practising in the south of England. Lyon also played cricket for Somerset, and in Test Trials for England. In July 1930 he began doing cricket commentaries for Movietone, his first credit being ‘MANCHESTER TEST MATCH WITH COMMENTARY BY MR. M.D. LYON’ in British Movietone News No.60. This included a shot of Lyon speaking into the microphone. Lyon acted as commentator for several Movietone cricket reports, but the last was ‘SECOND TEST MATCH V. NEW ZEALAND AT THE OVAL’ in No.113 of August 1931. In 1932 Lyon went to the Gambia as a magistrate, and - with the exception of his war service - spent the remainder of his career as a judge in different parts of the British Empire.
