British Universities Film Council
1968
On 19th April 1968 Professor John Grenville and Nicholas Pronay presented their film ‘The Munich Crisis’ at the seminal conference ‘Film and the Historian’, held at University College London. The two-day event brought together academics (AJP Taylor), archivists (Ernest Lindgren of the National Film Archive) and commercial film libraries (Visnews, Pathe and Movietone). It articulated a growing interest in film and history, and catalysed the formation of a consortium of universities that would enable historians to produce ‘historical films’. An edited transcript of the conference was produced as a monograph and published later that year by the BUFC.
