- Description
- At midday on a busy high street in Birmingham, a group of armed robbers drive a truck into a jewellery shop, stealing £300,000 worth of gold. They escape in less than 60 seconds. Forensic Scene Investigator Drew Birtles is dispatched to the jewellery shop to recover any forensic clues which could help identify the robbers. The investigation becomes more challenging when no real forensic evidence is found at the crime scene and the robbers switch cars leaving the trail to go cold. It seems the gang are well-organised and forensically aware. West Midland Police’s Force Priorities Unit, a specialist team tasked with completing the most high risk jobs and manhunts swarm the local area to find witnesses and CCTV that could give them a lead. CCTV of the gang of robbers switching cars is recovered, giving the police a new lead: the make and model of two escape cars and two abandoned getaway vehicles used in the ram raid robbery. With time now of the essence, the police track the escape cars using Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology. Meanwhile Forensic co-ordinator Rachel Hughes orders forensic searches of the two getaway cars, uncovering items that were left behind by the robbers in their haste to escape. These include a sledgehammer used in the robbery, sticky tape used to attach fake number plates onto the cars and potential DNA from the robbers themselves. Suspects are identified and investigators hope that forensic evidence from the cars could provide the vital information needed to help solve the case and bring down the thieves.
