- Description
- Are some ‘health foods’ really what they say they are? Ultra-processed foods are being disguised in supermarkets with branding saying they are ‘healthy’, ‘low-fat’ and ‘high in protein’. Dr. Xand Van Tulleken, in partnership with The Open University, exposes the truth behind what’s really in some so-called ‘health foods’. We’ve spoken a lot about ultra-processed foods on the show but one of the most common questions we get is how you spot them. There are some good rules of thumb about more than 10 ingredients etc, but in this piece we’ll be looking at "light" or "low fat" foods which are HIGH in ultra-processed chemicals that can you much more harm than that little bit of fat would have done. Examples include skimmed milk with all nutrients, as well as fat, removed from it, and diet bars full of artificial sweeteners.
