Description
The pilgrims continue their adventure in Durham and visit the 12th-century Norman cathedral. They are met by Canon Charlie Allen, who introduces them to the ancient pilgrim tradition of foot washing, although not all the pilgrims are keen to proffer their naked feet. Leaving Durham behind them, they head for Heavenfield, an ancient battlefield, and Housesteads, the UK’≠s best-preserved Roman fort on Hadrian’≠s Wall. Some of them head to Newcastle to visit the city’s Reform synagogue. For another taste of hermit life, the pilgrims follow St Oswald’≠s Way towards a hermitage from the early 1400s. Belonging to Warkworth Castle, the hermitage is carved deep inside a rock. It has its own tiny chapel and is where a hermit priest once lived. Along the way, the pilgrims start to open up and reveal more of themselves as the journey continues.
