- Description
- Programme three picks up the story in the 1970s, at Erno Goldfinger’s
Trellick Tower in West London. By now the Modern Movement is in retreat. Against a backdrop of riots, industrial unrest and recession,
people turn against Modernism’s utopian ideals and real failings.
When Margaret Thatcher halts public house building, and when Prince Charles denigrates much of what late 20th century architecture has become, Modernism’s demise seems complete. Public pressure leads to the demolition of some of the worst public housing schemes,
and the heritage movement and postmodernism come to the fore.
