Description
Adam Hart-Davis and Dr Lucie Green report from mission control in Germany on yesterday’s attempt to land a spacecraft on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons and the most distant landing ever attempted. Hart-Davis and his team have been with the British scientists responsible the instruments that look at Titan’s previously hidden surface, and report on the nervous wait to see if their experiment, in planning and construction for 17 years, survived impact. The programme will include the latest images released overnight, following a 90 minute 1.2 billion mile journey from the Cassini mothership.
Titan is apparently the most ‘earth-like’ object in the solar system, and scientists hope that studying its atmosphere, which is like that of the very early earth, may give clues to how conditions suitable for life were formed here on earth.
