Description
Black holes Sutherland and SALT Dark skies Dulverton UFOs. The second episode takes a look at galaxies and black holes. Live from South Africa, Liz Bonnin observes the two closest dwarf galaxies to us, the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, whilst Brian and Dara concentrate on our galaxy, the Milky Way, discussing its formation and why it has its distinctive barred spiral shape. They then explore the part black holes play in the structure of a galaxy, explaining their creation, the way they affect spice and time around them and how it is that we can tell where in space they are, despite their seeming invisibility. Elsewhere, Mark Thompson tackles the problem of Light Pollution, taking a group of city astronomers deep into the Cotswolds to reveal the wonders of a truly dark night sky and to highlight how harmful excess electrical lighting can be for stargazing. Plus, Liz predicts the long-term future of our local group, investigating the projected collision that will see the Milky Way collide with the nearby Andromeda Galaxy. Also, on a somewhat lighter note the team explores the phenomena of Unidentified Flying Objects, offering rational explanations for why so many people still maintain they have seen flying saucers in the sky.
