Description
Work may have been at the heart of working class life, but once we clocked off- whoa, it was a different world! From the streets where we lived, to our holidays, not to mention our nights on the town, this was where the working class came into their own. Terraced streets of women scrubbing steps and keeping up appearances, men packed into the local pub after a hard days graft, the air thick with smoke and laughter, kids brought up, not just by their family, but by a whole street! But has this world now become a thing of the past? Fiercely proud of his own working class identity, Paul O’Grady is on a mission to find out, and has a good old knees up while he’s at it! In episode two of a major two part series for BBC1, Paul O’Grady goes on a very personal journey through the history of the British working class home. With the help of his friends Cilla Black and Twiggy, he explores how the hardships their communities faced forged the bonds that held the whole community together, not to mention the fearsome gossip that kept everyone in line! Along the way Paul finds out what a working class community looks like today and discovers some surprising similarities with another working class lad turned TV presenter, Reggie Yates. He meets the actor Murray Melvin to talk about the taboo-busting classic of working class life, A Taste of Honey, and chats to our former Prime Minister about the great working class night out, music hall. All together now- "It’s the same the whole world over, it’s the poor what gets the blame"
