- Synopsis
- An interpretation of the Hamlet story, based on the 6th-century Danish source Chronicle of Saxo Grammaticus, a possible source for Shakespeare’s play. Prince Amled (Bale) witnesses his father’s murder and feigns madness while he plans his revenge. Later he arrives in England and marries the English princess (Beckinsale) and, after killing his uncle, inherits the throne.

- The film was previewed at the ‘Shakespeare on Film’ season as part of the Everybody’s Shakespeare International Festival, at the Barbican Centre, London on November 5 1994. Miramax bought the US distribution rights but never released the film theatrically. A subsequent US video release added a voiceover and cut the running time to 85mins.
