Synopsis
In four sections, each consisting of an interview/workshop:
Part 1: A survey of the stage history of Shylock, with particular reference to the changing interpretations of the role. With Dr Tom Matheson of the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham.
Part 2: A consideration of the possible anti-semitic interpretations which may be given to the play. With William Frankel, former editor of the Jewish Chronicle.
Part 3: An interview with Jonathan Miller, who directed Laurence Olivier as Shylock at the National Theatre and was producer of the BBC Television Shakespeare Series The MERCHANT OF VENICE with Warren Mitchell as Shylock.
Part 4: A workshop session with Ian MacDiarmid and Patrick Stewart who have both played Shylock in Royal Shakespeare Company productions.
