Troilus and Cressida
- Synopsis
- 1: Professor Harold Brooks introduces the play, singling out its uniqueness in the Shakespearean output. He then begins his treatment of the play’s dramatic unit, considering the choice of subject, the unification of the themes of love and war and the deeper meaning of these two themes. On the second tape he considers the role of Thersites, the parallel of the truths enunciated by Hector and Ulysses, whose subsequent actions fall short of the ideals they have stated, the parallel of Thersites and Pandarus and the tone of the play.
2: Professor Harold Brooks discusses value and valuation, and time. On the second tape he completes his treatment of the leading themes with a consideration of identity, briefly touching on the themes in the play’s imagery, and ends with a review of the play’s stagecraft. - Language
