Prince Maker, The

Synopsis
Television arts documentary. Prior to the opening of Franco Zeffirelli’s Italian production of Hamlet at the National Theatre, London, Zeffirelli is seen directing the scene between Hamlet and Gertrude (III iv), with John Stride and Pamela Brown, intercut with the same scene in Zeffirelli’s Italian production, filmed in Italy. A brief but well executed film with an entertaining exchange between Stride and Zeffirelli over differences in interpretation. The Italian film is conventional.

Notes

General
The programme is substantially a repeat of TEMPO’s WIND OF CHANGE: THE ART OF FRANCO ZEFFIRELLI (tx 12 April 1964), re-broadcast to co-incide with the production appearing at the Old Vic. The British scenes were recreated for the studio; the Italian scenes appear to be extracts from a full-length film. Zeffirelli later filmed HAMLET (1990) with Mel Gibson.
