Monitor [12/04/1959]

Synopsis
Item from the television arts programme. Alfred Alvarez interviews Paul Robeson, then appearing as Othello in Stratford. Robeson recalls playing the role in the past and puts strong emphasis on the racial theme. Robeson believes that Othello shows a black man in a white society, and Othello is not merely ‘jealous’ but is motivated by insults to his race - for Robeson, it is ‘a play essentially of honour’.
