King Lear

Synopsis
Radio broadcast. Led by Aylmer Buesst, the BBC Orchestra plays Haydn’s composition which was originally composed to accompany a performance of King Lear in Esterhaz castle. It is comprised of an overture, a funeral march and four intermezzos: ‘Hatred and Ingratitude’, ‘The Thunderstorm’, ‘Pity’, and ‘The Battle’.

General
Haydn’s overture and incidental music to King Lear were first performed at castle Esterhaz with Haydn as conductor in 1776. The music was specifically composed for a performance of the play at the castle by Karl Wahr’s travelling theatrical company.
History
Broadcast as part of a music slot which also featured the Overture and Dances of ‘The Masque of Timon of Athens’ by Henry Purcell.
