- Synopsis
- Radio broadcast. Led by Aylmer Buesst, the BBC Orchestra plays Haydn’s composition which was originally composed to accompany a performance of King Lear in Esterhaz castle. It is comprised of an overture, a funeral march and four intermezzos: ‘Hatred and Ingratitude’, ‘The Thunderstorm’, ‘Pity’, and ‘The Battle’.

- Haydn’s overture and incidental music to King Lear were first performed at castle Esterhaz with Haydn as conductor in 1776. The music was specifically composed for a performance of the play at the castle by Karl Wahr’s travelling theatrical company.
