- Reviews
- Peter Morris in his survey ‘Shakespeare on Film’, Films in Review 24:3 (1973), pp132-163 notes ‘not only does Freda’s adaptation make clear his lack of understanding of Shakespeare but in the case of the English version more care was given to matching the actor’s lip movements to the dialogue, than to rendering Shakespeare’s dialogue faithfully. The disastrous results are accentuated by the monotones in which the lines are read. The location sets (in Verona) were well chosen but the acting is lamentable; either stiff and clumsy or grossly overplayed’.
