Romeo and Juliet

Synopsis
Television documentary, introduced by Melvyn Bragg, that examines the enduring appeal of Romeo and Juliet. A somewhat pedestrian account of the play’s appeal offering few fresh insights. The programme includes several scenes from the Royal Shakespeare Company’s current production with Rupert Evans and Morven Christie in the title roles. Evans and Christie also comment on their interpretation. There are extracts from the filmed versions by Luhrmann and Zeffirelli, from WEST SIDE STORY, and the Royal Ballet Prokofiev ballet with Nureyev and Fonteyn. Contributors include Baz Luhrmann, novelist Jeanette Winterson, journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, dancer Wayne Sleep, theatre directors Nancy Meckler and Tim Supple, playwright Mark Ravenhill and Shakespeare scholar Jonathan Bate. Dire Straits ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is played over scenes in Verona.
